The Huacachina Oase

The Huacachina Oasis is an oasis five kilometers west of the Peruvian city of Ica, in the middle of the desert. In the 50s and 60s of the last century, the Huacachina was a popular and one of Peru's most exclusive destinations, mainly because of the dry, warm and sunny climate throughout the year. It is a natural lagoon that was originally fed by filtration of so-called aquifers. However, due to recent drilling in the area, the survival of the Oasis was in danger and local entrepreneurs have had water pipes built to guarantee the supply of fresh water and the pre-existence of the Huacachina Oasis.

Nowadays, the oasis feels a bit outdated. Nevertheless, it is an interesting stopover for those who do the Lima – Arequipa route by bus and certainly for the more adventurous tourist, a tour with the Sand Dune Buggies  is a nice option.
